CLOCKENFLAP 2024 SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME
At Clockenflap, we’re committed to minimizing our environmental impact and creating an eco-friendly festival experience. Every year, we take steps to reduce waste, recycle more, and promote responsible consumption across all areas of the festival. Sustainability takes collective effort—not just from our partners, but from our vendors and the most important part of it all: you, the audience. Together, we can make an impact. Here's what's happening:
OUR EFFORTS
Water
At Clockenflap, we’re making hydration easy and eco-friendly. With free water stations set up by our partner Life Solutions, you can refill your reusable bottle with fresh, clean water anytime. And if you don’t have a bottle, don’t worry—grab a complimentary rPET (recycled PET) water bottle at water stations while stocks last.
Green Stations
New for 2024, we’re introducing Green Stations throughout the festival grounds, featuring a streamlined waste system with clear sorting options: Recycle, Compost, and Others (items that, unfortunately, cannot be recycled or composted will end up in Landfill—until, hopefully, better technology/solution becomes available in the future). These stations are staffed to help you get it right, while also offering information about where each type of waste ends up. Plus, our Waste Wise Green Ambassadors will be circulating around, ready to answer questions about composting and recycling in a more detailed manner.
Plastic
The only two plastic products that are provided to the audience on-site are the recycled PET (rPET) water bottles at bars and the water canisters, designed to close the loop on plastic use. Through our partner Baguio, collected rPET bottles are processed into rPET flakes, which are then crafted into new recycled PET products. It’s a full circle of reuse and recycling, keeping plastic in the loop and out of the landfill.
Compost
At Clockenflap 2024, all tableware we provide—including food containers, utensils, and cups—is 100% compostable. Our cups provided by Sustainabl. Planet feature a water-based bio-coating techology and are printed with plant-based eco-ink, making them fully compostable and leaving no trace. After collection, our partner Waste Wise sorts the waste: food scraps go to O Park 1 to be turned into compost and biogas, while compostable tableware, including cups, is processed into nutrient-rich compost for local HK farms, enriching the soil to grow yummy food for you. It’s another cycle, helping us close the loop on waste!
Sustainability isn’t just visible in public spaces—it’s happening behind the scenes too! Here’s what we’re doing:
F&B Areas
We’ve been recycling for a while, but this year we’re stepping it up! We’ll be collecting and responsibly recycling a full list of materials: cardboard, aluminum cans, glass, Tetra Pak, used cooking oil and compostables. Each item has a designated destination to ensure it’s processed sustainably—another step towards reducing our environmental footprint.
Production Waste
-
Signage: Look around, and you’ll see signage and scrims across the festival site. This year, we’re teaming up with Senkoo to transition our signage to PVC-free, recyclable cardboard banners and scrims.
-
Black Mesh: We’ll send the black mesh used on-site to local farms in Hong Kong, giving this material a new life.
-
Shrubs & Plants: During site setup, some plants will be relocated to make space for you to enjoy the show. These shrubs won’t go to waste—they’ll be gathered, composted, and transformed into nutrient-rich soil.
-
Zip Ties: Essential for setting up safe festival spaces, cable ties are also part of our sustainability plan. Our partner, Baguio, will recycle them by regrinding and extruding the material, then passing them to collectors to create new products.
HOW CAN YOU HELP
Transportation
Help reduce emissions by taking public transport to our awesome venue. If you’re planning on a taxi, share the ride with friends—it’s better for the planet and more fun!
Water
Avoid water waste, and bring your own canister or grab one of our Life Solutions bottles to refill at the water stations. Stay hydrated while you enjoy the festival!
Waste Disposal
Please use the Green Stations to sort your waste properly. Our volunteers and staff are there to help, so feel free to ask! Proper sorting helps reduce contamination and amplifies our impact. And remember—no littering on the floor!
Take Care of our Venue
We’re here for the long haul, and we want to keep this venue beautiful. Please take care of the grounds, trees, and plants in Tamar Park—they’re key allies in fighting climate change!
