MAKHA DIOP & SUNU ASKAN BAND (SUN)SA
From Senegal, West Africa, Makha Diop has been playing the djembe drum from a young age. Born into a community of drummers, Makha was surrounded by the rich musical traditions of Senegal in his everyday life. An important part of everyday life and culture, the rhythms Makha plays and teaches have been passed down through generations of djembe players.
Part of the Africa Djembe Group, while living in Senegal Makha regularly played at festivals and for dignitaries and famous visitors to his hometown and has performed for the likes of Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul the second. Makha moved to Hong Kong in 2001 and soon after set up his company, African Drumming and Dance Connection (ADADC) with the goal of sharing his country’s musical culture and traditions. He regularly works with international schools, universities, businesses and corporations, leading West African drumming and dance workshops. He is a passionate and dedicated teacher, who is committed to sharing the joys and benefits of West African Drumming.
Makha will be joined by the Sunu Askan band (from ADADC) for an unforgettable start kicking off the Harbourflap stage on Sunday 19th.
